This sixth plate ruby ambrotype comes from the Bill Turner collection and shows a young, very innocent, and somewhat worried looking southern soldier in a military frock coat. The coat shows nine brass buttons down the front that are tough to make out, but are likely Virginia, given Bill’s collecting interests. The stand-up collar appears to show a button on one side and appears to be taped along the lower front edges below the bottom button. His cuffs at first appear to show a narrow, light color band, but it seems rather that he has turned them back exposing the edge of the sleeve lining.
The image is cased in an embossed leatherette case with facing pad, mat, glass and frame in place. The soldier is young, clean-shaven, with slightly long hair. The photographer has lightly tinted his cheeks. He has likely adopted a serious look and perhaps turned back the cuffs on a new uniform for the occasion of a formal photographic portrait, perhaps his first, but the slightly down-turned mouth makes it rather evocative, as if wondering about his fate, as does the viewer.
