Here we have a quarter plate cased ambrotype of an unidentified Confederate soldier with a fiery look in his eyes. He wears a shell jacket open and unbuttoned with cloth epaulettes and matching vest buttoned only at the throat and at his waist. The buttons on his vest appear to be plain coin buttons. He wears a plain white shirt underneath and a black cravat at his neck. His watch chain is also visible at his waist.

This ambrotype is very dark and the details are somewhat difficult to make out. The image was produced on clear glass and backed with black lacquer which has started to crack. A couple minor chips have flaked off but the lacquer remains intact with the exception of those minor chips. The image is badly solarized. There are also imperfections throughout the image, possibly from when the image was produced by the photographer.

This image comes housed in a great union case that is in good shape. The hinges are in perfect working order. The case shows only one chip on the front right-hand corner but there are or cracks.  The case will close shut but opening requires a bit of finesse. The burgundy velvet cushion is imprinted with a diamond shaped design and is intact. The brass mat, keeper and glass are all intact as well. There are minor pushes and bends to both the mat and keeper. The case is marked “CPC-36.” When the image is removed from the case, you can see a name written in black marker and the star imprint is circled. The maker’s label has been removed from the back.

This image comes from the Bill Turner portion of the Ray Richey collection of images.  [cls [ph:L]
