FANTASTICALLY CLEAR SEATED VIEW OF A 1ST VIRGINIA CAVALRY OFFICER WEARING A VIRGINIA BELT PLATE

$2,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1138-1811

Image is a sixth-plate ambrotype showing an unidentified subject from the waist up. He wears a dark single-breasted frock coat with attachments on his shoulders for brush epaulettes. At his waist is his belt with shoulder support strap and a rectangular plate bearing the Virginia State Seal. Also visible is the hilt of his cavalry saber.

Image is crystal clear with great contrast. The only blemish is a spot of discoloration away from the subject in the upper left corner.

The photo comes with a decorative brass mat and stamped brass frame housed in a very nice Union case with a raised decoration depicting a seated Liberty with shield flanked by a steam boat and locomotive. Case is in excellent condition.

The 1st Virginia Cavalry was organized on July 16, 1861 and according to their record online they took part in 654 battles and skirmishes including all the major actions of the Army of Northern Virginia.

Image is from the collection of the late William A. Turner and is worthy of any museum or advanced photo collection. [ad] [ph:L]
