This ninth plate ambrotype shows a young Confederate officer from the knees up, seated in a studio with arm resting a table beside him, clutching his sword so that the hilt is visible to the camera. The photo is likely taken very early in the war. He wears a single-breasted gray frock coat and his trousers appear to the same color, with a darker seam stripe. His forage cap, however, seems to be dark and may very well be blue, and his rank is indicated by a set of shoulder straps, rather than the Confederate regulation collar insignia and sleeve knots. He is almost certainly a line officer- a captain or lieutenant who served on foot in the battle line with his men.

The photographer has gilded his buttons, edges of his shoulder straps, sword hilt, belt plate, obscuring detail, but the latter appears to be a U.S. 1851 pattern sword belt plate. The officer wears his sword belt over an officer’s sash, which the photographer very delicately tinted crimson, the color shifting slightly toward maroon, which has happened to most of the surviving sashes themselves.

The plate shows overall fine spotting, but shows excellent clarity on the officer’s face and even the backs of his hands. This is cased in thermoplastic case with raised floral and geometric designs in very good condition. The facing pad, oval mat, frame, and glass are in place. This comes from the collection of Bill Turner and may well have a Virginia connection, that being the focus of his collecting and dealing.  [sr] [ph:m]
