Disheveled man posed in uniform. His outer appearance is that of a Union First Lieutenant with a saber. He wears a 9-button frock coat with First Lieutenant embroidered shoulder straps and holds a saber with the waist belt and belt plate hanging down loosely. Buttons and brass was gilted.

Upon closer look you notice that he is wearing civilian clothes underneath the frock including a double-breasted vest with “flower” buttons. Was he home on leave when pressed to record a photo? Or is he a poser utilizing the photographers props?

And how about that hair?

The image is beautifully matted and framed and housed in a gutta percha “patriotic” case. The inside opposite the image is purple velvet. Both halves of the hard case match and show a foliate pattern around the parameter. In the center is a patriotic motif with cannons, flags, muskets, and an eagle. An extremely small maker’s name is found in the lower, left corner on both halves: “A. SCHAEFER”. Two of the eight corners are chipped, otherwise the case is in very fine condition.

Ambrotypes were a photographic process on glass introduced in the early 1850s. The ambrotype quickly grew in popularity because it maintained the image clarity of the daguerreotype—an earlier process on silver-plated copper invented in 1839—but was faster and cheaper to produce.  [jet] [ph:L]
