This exceedingly unique photo of a young soldier with his friend or relative has many desirable details to the Civil War collector.
The soldier himself has removed his cover to show his closely trimmed hair. Notably, he wears a smart, indigo broadcloth vest over a collared shirt with a small cravat tie, matching his new untrimmed mounted services jacket – an uncommonly seen by highly-sought-after issue garment popular among US infantry and Signal Corps enlisted personnel for its style and practicality. His issued trousers obscure a pair of boots that rise to his mid-calf area.
His arm is intertwined with that of his friend, in a beautiful formal suit comprised of a ruffled shirt with striped cravat tie, a patterned vest of fine silk or wool, and a frock of wool or cotton with matching trousers. His trousers also obscure his boots, the tops of which are visible through his pant leg.
Each man stands in front of the base of the stabilizer braces used by the photographer to prevent movement, resting their feet on a tiled floor or very convincingly painted ground cloth. A plain fabric backdrop joins the floor to form a solid background.
The gutta percha case shows light edge chipping on the front of the case. The relief on the front is a popular period symbol of honor called “The Trist”, depicting the discovery and capture of Major Andre during the Revolution and his subsequent sterling conduct in the face of execution. The reverse side features a blank oval frame. Case measures 5”x4”.
Overall, this is an incredible glimpse into the early experiences of the US soldier during the Civil War with uncommon features for the eagle-eyed uniform enthusiast, and a link to the home front in a perfectly period display of fraternal affection. [cm][ph:L]
