This handsome young officer was captured on a glass plate in striking contrast. Complete with saber, belt, sash, and healthy chinstrap beard, the man stands next to a decorative pedestal and in front of a plain wall or backdrop.
The image is secured by a brass frame with floral patterns. Scattered, small areas of tarnish are noted but the frame is complete and in sound condition. A piece of clear glass protects the photograph, while a piece of darkened backs it. The frame rests in a “union” case with a bountiful harvest motif on both halves. A velvet pad in rich burgundy with floral embossment occupies the front half of the case. The second half retains the original label, which reads, “Littlefield, Parsons & Co., MANUFACTURERS OF Daguerreotype Cases. / L., P. & Co., are the sole Proprietors and only legal Manu-facturers of UNION CASES, with the Embracing Riveted Hinge. Patented October 14, 1856, and April 21, 1857.” Small cracks are noted at the left corners and upper right corner of the first case half. Both hinges are complete, as is the patented clasp.
An attention-grabbing photo. Perfect for display among any Civil War image collection. [cm][ph:L]
