This daguerreotype photo features a seated young woman with a piercing gaze directed at the camera lens. In beautiful contrast, she sits in a formal dress with matching fabric-covered buttons, her arm draped over a parlor table with a wedding band on display. Her ornate broach joins the false collar, which matches her cuffs, and the top of her dress – a classic feature of Civil War period attire.
The beautiful case features the rare “Portrait of a Learned Man” – a period homage to several works from the 16th century – the 18th century, meant to convey a value for knowledge and advancement. It is wholly undamaged with a single brass closure and two brass hinges. The beautiful, gilded frame is rectangularly shaped with nice decorative accents, a plain border, and a twisted pattern along the edges. The velvet lining is a nice light plum-red variation with an embossed circular floral design. Case measures 4” x 3.5”.
This is a wonderful example of the earliest type of photography, and the type that might have adorned a mantel or accompanied a soldier to the front during the Civil War. No period photography collection is complete without such a lovely home front example such as this. [cm][ph:L]
