Few uniforms are as easily recognized as those of the associated New York State Militia.  Active for many years prior to and still active today as a New York National Guard Regiment. During the Civil War era, they were playfully mocked for their gray and black uniforms and the fact that a large portion of the regiment’s men belonged to the upper classes of New York City society.

This Dag image features a seated enlisted member of the famous unit in full, proprietary trappings and a distinct “4” on his cap. A light emulsion error at low left does not detract from the overall presentation.  The image is framed in a gilt brass with a St. Louis manufacturer stamped at either low corner.  The image and frame are housed in a pressed board case with gold bordered accent patterning and raised floral spray.  The interior leather hinge holds the case halves together, which close securely with two hook clasps. Dimensions are 3.1” x 4.1”.

A very uncommon photography subject, ready for display among any discerning Civil War collection.  [cm][ph:L]
