Great image of two Union soldiers posed in front of a painted backdrop of a camp scene with flying full color US flag. One soldier is seated and the other stands by a painted in tree next to an “A” tent.
The standing officer wears a dark slouch hat at a rakish angle and a frock coat with matching trousers. Coat is buttoned down the front with each button touched with a bit of gilt. 2nd Lieutenant’s shoulder straps are also touched with gilt as is his waistbelt.
The seated soldier wears a dark slouch hat, dark coat and trousers with knee high boots. Around his neck is a loose light-colored scarf.
Behind the two men is an open field with a flagpole that has a full color US flag flying from it with another one in the far distance.
Image has contrast that could be a bit lighter. It is on the dark side; however, details are visible. Matt has patriotic shields and laurel branches in each corner with the usual scalloped frame.
Image is housed in a wonderful Union case with a decoration titled “UNION AND CONSTITUTION.” Front and back have a raised scrollwork border with a great raised patriotic decoration. This consists of a spread-winged eagle at center, perched on a patriotic shield flanked by cannons. Rising behind the eagle are four US flags, two on each side, with tents in the background. The case has a thin closed crack running approx. 3.00 inches near the edge on one side. There are also some minor edge chips. Both brass hinges are good. Interior pillow is of green felt with a geometric decoration. Pillow is loose. [ad]
