This 1/6 plate tintype is a very nice full view of a mounted Union corporal in front of a wood filled with tents.

The subject trooper wears a dark forage cap with matching dark cavalry shell jacket with corporal’s chevrons and shoulder scales and trousers that are tinted sky blue. Also visible at his waist is his belt with pistol holster. The photographer has gilded the subjects shoulder scales, chevrons, buttons, cuff piping, sword hilt and trouser leg stripe.

The trooper’s mount is uniformly dark but still the clarity is such that the bridle and reins can easily be seen as well as the bit and headstall buckles.

Clearly visible on the saddle are the saddle bags, blanket roll wrapped in a gum blanket at rear, saber scabbard at side and at front a round saddle valise on which the trooper rests his hand which is holding the reins.

A close examination of the background reveals a wooden rail in front of a patch of woods. In the immediate background, under the horses head, there appears to be another soldier kneeling beneath the rail. Above him in the woods can be seen a number of tents. The same can be seen in the woods behind the subject.

Clarity and contrast are very good. Horizontal wrinkle in emulsion brought out by the digital camera's flash, which is only noticeable to the naked eye if tilted in the right light.

Image has scalloped decorative mat with stamped brass frame all housed in a Union case with an exterior decoration of flowers and leaves with a oval medallion at center of a square. The medallion is decorated with a crosshatched linear design.
