SIXTH PLATE TINTYPE OF A YOUNG UNION SOLDIER WITH PATRIOTIC MAT

$395.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1139-02

Nice waist-up view of a young Union private who looks too young to shave. He wears a dark forage cap at a rakish angle and a matching dark frockcoat with eagle buttons. The subject’s cheeks are lightly tinted rose.

Clarity and contrast are excellent. The plate has some dark scratches on the emulsion but nothing serious. Most are around the edge of the photo with one small scratch near the back of the subject’s head.

Stamped brass mat is decorated with US flags and bayonets at the top with a cannon with stacked cannonballs and a sailing ship at bottom. At bottom center is a small scroll that reads “JULY $, 1776.”

Image is housed in a very nice Union case that is free from cracks and chips with a scrollwork and geometric exterior decoration.

A dandy little image of “somebody’s darling.”  [AD] [ph:L]
