LIKELY SOUTHERN OUTDOOR TINTYPE OF MAN AND HORSE

Item Code: 1138-1997

This sixth plate tintype is housed in an embossed leatherette case and shows a young man in a very wide-brimmed hat posed next to a saddled horse. He is in shirtsleeves, turned to the viewer’s right, holding the pommel of the saddle with one hand, the other down at his side. He wears suspenders and wide-legged trousers. The background is indistinct by seems to be a rising hillside in the distance. Not much detail can be made of the saddle, but the horse is fitted with a breast band.

This comes from the collection of the late Bill Turner. There is nothing specifically military in the image, but outdoor images are scarce early on and this certainly has an 1860s feel. Bill likely found it in Virginia, the focus of his interest, and the very broad brim hat, likely straw, has a definitely southern flavor. The owner is so casually dressed it is clear he did not have to be wealthy to own a horse and be accustomed to riding. It is a good reminder of why southern cavalry so thoroughly dominated northern mounted troops for the first two years of the war.

The image has only some very minor scratches and is matted, glassed and framed, with the facing pad in place and the case hinge intact. [sr] [ph:m]
