This Confederate soldier is seated with one arm resting on the table beside him. He wears dark trousers and a simple dark jacket showing six small brass buttons down the front and a short, standing collar. He has strapped a large bowie knife around his waist with a narrow belt and simple frame buckle. The grip shows two rivets, implying it is made in two pieces. A curving knuckle bow extends into a forward curving quillon. The scabbard, visible under the soldier’s other arm at left, shows it has a wide blade and clip point.

The clarity is excellent. There is a little spotting at left, but that seems to be in a lacquer or varnish used to seal the plate rather than in the emulsion itself, and there is no flaking. For all his warlike appearance, the soldier has groomed himself carefully, with neatly combed hair, trimmed mustache and thin beard. The photographer delicately tinted his cheeks. The collar of a white shirt shows at his neck.

The image is a ninth plate tintype, matted, framed and glassed, housed in a nice thermoplastic case with an embossed, red velvet facing pad, and raised floral and geometric cover designs. Needless to say, if you have a knife of this configuration, you are probably calling us right now. It would be a must-have to display with it. In any event, this is a great early-war image, taken when Bowie and large side knives not only threatened bloody close-combat, but were produced as an emergency stop gap weapon, easy to make by any blacksmith, and weapons of any sort were in short supply. Ex-Bill Turner Collection.  [sr] [ph:M]
