Wonderful, clear image of a young mother dressed in a long black dress with a white lace collar and black bow at her throat flanked by her two children. Leaning against the mother’s knee is a young boy perhaps 4 or 5 years old with his hand in his mother’s lap holding her hand. The little fellow wears light-colored shirt and trousers with dark piping on the collar, both sides of the shirt placket, on the cuffs and outlining a horizontal breast pocket. Leaning against the mother on the opposite side is a young girl perhaps 9 or 10 years old. She wears a dark dress with bands of black on her cuffs and a dark sash.
Studying their faces, the family resemblance cannot be missed and the expressions of sorrow they display is more than just a case of 19th Century seriousness. There is sadness in their eyes and no doubt they mourn the loss of a husband and father to either war, disease or both.
Contrast and clarity are excellent. Plate has a minor shadow of oxidation along the exterior edge.
Decorative brass mat and stamped brass frame are present.
Image is housed in union case that is in excellent condition. The exterior raised decoration features of a man and woman and it is titled “THE PARTING OF HAFED AND HINDA.” The characters are based on an early 19th Century novel of two star crossed lovers from two different warring factions who decide to commit suicide together a la Romeo and Juliet.
In this instance the subject’s choice of a case to hold her photograph reinforces the idea that this is a mourning image.
From the collection of the late William A. Turner. [ad][ph:L]
