This sixth plate tintype features a standing infantryman wearing a frock coat, forage cap, kepi, and dark trousers. A pistol is tucked into his belt on the wearer’s right side. There is a knife also tucked into his belt on his left side. His belt plate has been gilted as well as the nine buttons down his frock coat. The regimental number on his kepi has also been gilted, which has in effect obscured the number and it cannot be read. This infantryman holds his musket at his side with his bayonet fixed. The subject is positioned in front of a backdrop which features a Sibley tent; he stands on a rocky dirt surface. Of interest is the presence of an additional photographer's head brace, on the far left side of the image.
This image is very dark and appears to have once been under an oval mat, which is no longer present. However, there is a rectangular mat in place. There is some wear on the image showing where the oval mat rubbed on the image. There is also a very noticeable bend about midway up the left side of the image which has facilitated some cracking and slight weakness of the tin. There is spotting throughout.
This image comes housed in a leatherette case. The binding is broken and has been taped but the tape is coming loose and is only attached to the bottom portion of the case. Removing the image shows that the reverse of the plate is rusting. There is nothing else behind the image. The red velvet cushion is in place on the front cover. [cla] [ph:L]
