Plate is an unusual size measuring 2 5/8 inches wide x 4.00 inches high and shows an unknown Union soldier posed seated and resting one arm on a table in front of a painted backdrop of a lakeside scene. He wears a dark infantry shell jacket devoid of any piping with a clearly visible Third Corps badge on his chest. The jacket is buttoned at the bottom but is open the rest of the way up to reveal a matching vest. The subject also wears light trousers.

Clarity is excellent and the contrast is good.

Image is housed in a black pressed paper frame with floral and leaf decoration with stamped crape formed into a bow at bottom. This type frame is unusual, not often seen and definitely suggests mourning. [ad] [ph:L]
