This crystal clear 6th plate tintype shows two Confederate NCOs seated in a half-length view, against a plain background, both wearing dark caps and one with his arm over his comrade’s shoulder. Both men wear gray jackets open to show gray military style vests, both garments trimmed with brass buttons lightly tinted gold by the photographer.

The soldier on the left shows sergeant’s chevrons on one sleeve and his jacket has shoulder tabs. His arm conceals the lower buttons on his jacket, but there are likely nine, indicating he is wearing a Richmond Depot Type-II jacket or a copy of one. The soldier on the right sports two narrow chevrons of a corporal and his jacket lacks the shoulder tabs, suggesting a later version of the uniform, but both men show white shirt collars and neatly knotted striped ties indicating they have put on their best uniforms, likely recently issued, for the camera.

The photographer has very delicately tinted their cheeks red and we note the corporal seems to be wearing dark gloves on his folded hands, suggesting the two may have gotten a furlough from a winter camp to have their likenesses taken. “Pards” is, of course, Civil War soldier slang for “partners.” Comradeship was something cherished by veterans of both armies and this image nicely evokes it. It is housed in a very nice thermoplastic figural case with mother and child on one side and grapes and leaves on the other, and comes from the collection of the late Bill Turner, noted Virginia collector and dealer.  [sr] [ph:m]
