Image is a seated view of a stern looking young soldier wearing a forage cap with dark oilcloth rain cover, dark overcoat with folded down collar, and matching dark trousers. At his waist is his belt with rectangular plate.
All buttons as well as the belt plate have been touched with gilt. The subject also wears a pin on his breast which the photographer has obliterated with a dab of gilt paint.
Contrast and clarity are very good though the image does have some light spotting around the edge of the mat.
Stamped brass mat has a military motif with flags, cannon and a riband reading “THE UNION NOW AND FOREVER” at bottom.
Image comes in a full case with repaired hinge and stamped brass frame around the mat. [ad][ph:L]
