This soldier is shown seated with legs crossed, one hand in his lap and his other arm resting on a small table next to his kepi. He wears a nine-button jacket with a narrow dark band around the lower edge of the collar and a pair of trousers with two narrow dark stripes visible on the side of each leg. His jacket is open reveal a partially opened vest, also with brass buttons. His cheeks have been thinly tinted red and his trousers show some light blue. The subject is well groomed, with short hair, mustache and small chin beard. He has serious somewhat weary look. The jacket and cap have a light tone, but gauging color in tintypes is tricky even with some adapted color palettes. The uniform is non-regulation, but a member of the Veteran Reserve Corps might be a possibility, which would fit well with our interpretation of his expression.
The photographer has posed him close to the painted backdrop, which puts him in an imaginary outdoor setting with a distant landscape to the viewer’s right and curving staircase descending at the left. It may be possible to match this to backdrops in images identified to a particular photographer. The clarity is good. There are just a couple of short, light scratches.
The image is matted, glassed, framed, and cased in a leatherette case with hinge and hook, showing some wear to embossed floral and geometric case, but with floral embossed light red facing pad in place inside opposite the image. [sr][ph:L]
