Sergeants had to have a strong character to consort with their men constantly on a very personal level and still maintain authority and discipline. They would make a nice case study or a focused subject for the photography collector. This fellow seems a prime example.

He is shown in a two-thirds standing view, with great clarity and contrast, wearing a dark regulation forage cap and a state issue fatigue blouse that differs from the federal issue version in having a short standing collar that is piped, and is fastened by five buttons (appearing to have rims and thus likely state seals,) rather than four. He is well groomed, has a serious no-nonsense look on his face, has adopted a Napoleonic military pose by thrusting one hand into his lapel, and has also made it a point to be photographed armed, carrying a sheathed socket bayonet (looking like an Enfield Pattern 1853 to us) on his U.S. waistbelt.

The photographer has delicately tinted his cheeks red, his chevrons infantry light blue, and has lightly gilt his brass buttons and belt plate. The latter was done lightly enough to show the US on his belt plate, which he has turned upside down in a vain attempt to compensate for the lateral reversal of the photographic process- resulting in it being appearing both upside down and reversed- though woe betide the private who might point it out to him.

The image is very clear, with no smudges, scratches or solarization. It is matted, glassed and framed. The case has its purple velvet facing pad in place showing an impressed foliate design with just minor fading and edge wear. The case itself is brown with raised geometric and floral motifs. The hinge and spring catch are intact. The faces and raised designs are good, but inner lower edge of the back half of the case, supporting the image, has a crack and is missing a small piece.    [sr][ph:L]
