This is an absolute classic view of a proud, young enlisted man in his new fatigue uniform.
Leaning on a prop column with a painted fabric pastoral background scene, this young man stands in what is obviously a photographer’s studio. The base of the stabilizing brace is visible behind what appear to be Jefferson Bootees or “Brogans”. He wears a common “sack coat” or fatigue blouse, issued by the US Government. The fall of the collar suggests that this is a contract manufacture blouse, as could be found on millions of servicemen during the Civil War. His “Type I” style Forage Cap rests squarely on his head in accordance with regulation, and we can clearly note his adjustable chinstrap and brass buckle, highlighted by hand with gold paint along with each uniform button. The young man’s hand is tucked neatly into his breast pocket and his chest is forward, a ubiquitous Civil War pose of pride.
The case is in virtually perfect condition, save for one small crack in the lower corner of the case. The velvet lining is a deep plum color with an embossed symmetrical floral motif. The case front relief is a brilliant, patriotic shielded eagle with crossed flags, a banner that reads “The Union and Constitution”, and a floral banner. The stamped metal photo border is a long oval with floral spray and Greek columns. This case, measuring 3.8” x 3.2”, paired with the young man in the photograph, were obviously proud and dear objects to the man or his loved ones at home.
This would be a focal point of any new or old collection of enlisted men of the Civil War. [cm][ph:L]
