This exceedingly rare image of a Union enlisted man offers us several clues as to his military career: a frock trimmed in a lighter color, buttoned vest with a pressed collared shirt, and a wide brimmed hat resting on a parlor table – adorned with a lightly colored hat cord and a brass Engineer insignia.  If this man was part of the US Army’s Corps of Engineers, his frock and hat cord would be of a golden color, slightly differentiated from the trim of cavalrymen.  If he was a member of a volunteer engineer regiment – several of which existed across the armies – then he may very well be sporting light blue infantry trim in keeping with regulations for volunteers.  His trousers are the very standard issue light blue infantry trousers expected to be seen on a recruit during the war, ruffled by his cross-legged pose.  His bearded face is clear and beautifully contrasted against a painted pastoral backdrop made of heavy fabric.

In the other half of the case, what is presumably the soldier’s wife sits holding their young baby.  Cameo earrings are visible thanks to her parted hairstyle, and from there she is wearing a modest, striped dress with a black belt.  The child is wearing a lace dress with small bootees and sucking her thumb.  She is minimally blurred, which is a fairly remarkable feat for such typically long and involved photography sessions.

The case measures 3.25” x 3.75” and is in an excellent condition with no evidence of chipping or cracking. A single brass attachment securely closes and brass hinges close the case halves.  The motif on the front of the case is a period popular rendition of “Lady with Falcon”.

An uncommon chance to own a scarce picture of an Engineer with those who were important to him.  A feature of any collection, to be sure.  [cm][ph:L]
