This very rare double view of a Federal enlisted man is a standout among Civil War photographs.
The first half of the case features a Federal soldier, sporting a light blue trimmed infantry frock and a “Type I” Forage Cap adorned with the company letter “F”. The collar of his frock rises higher on the neck, suggesting an early contract-produced garment. Sitting in a pose typical of the period, the young man rests his arms and offers an unanimated expression directed at the camera’s lens.
The second half of the case shows the same young soldier, posing in a more aggressive stance, complete with a slinged m1861 rifle musket standing at rest in his hand. His buttoned frock is visible to the waist and his unoccupied arms rest across his lap.
The case is slightly damaged with some cracking along the case frame that prevents the case from being securely closed. However, the details of the photos overshadow the condition of the case. A single brass closure is present and in good condition, as are both brass hinges. Each metallic frame shines brilliantly with floral designs and rests in a brown fabric liner. The relief on the cases’ front is a unique seashell with floral spray patterning. There is no evident chipping to any areas of the case. Case measures 3.25” x 3.75”.
These photographs are an essential piece for the photography and Civil War collector, showing a member of an unnamed Company F in a scare early contract uniform dress frock. [cm][ph:L]
