This sixth plate tintype photograph is unique in that it features what is presumably the female members of a family, mounted in an ornate Victorian era mourning case.
Finished in a rich, black lacquer and featuring beautiful geometric overlayed border patterns, a mother of pearl inlay draws attention to the center of the case front. A brass clasp is present, but a slight separation near the binding of the case prevents it from staying fully closed. The interior is adorned with a gold floral border and a velvet pad in a subtle red to burgundy color with a floral embossed pattern. The metallic photo frame is an oval shape with detailed patterning of floral and geometric patterns in a gilded gold style finish. The middle section, when viewed from the sides, is meant to simulate the gold-leafed pages of a fine book, and this case mimics that beautifully with a bright, gold painted hue and minimal wear. The reverse cover of the case features a simple border with minimal corner accents and a small mother of pearl inlay at its center. The case measures 3.4” x 3.9”.
The photograph itself clearly shows a group of women in mourning – dressed in dark clothing (primarily black and gray). They all resemble one another and share distinct facial features. At center, the youngest of the ladies holds a bouquet of flowers with subspecies typical of mourning practices and observations of the Civil War period. A somber expression graces each of their faces. No male is present, and it is a fair assumption that they are mourning a patriarchal figure within the family.
This photograph holds a unique distinction among more common types and styles of the period. No collection of Civil War period items is truly complete without a true example of a mourning photo in a mourning case. [cm][ph:L]
