Featured in this image is a young man, perhaps no more than a teenager, in his mounted services uniform. Seated next to a decorative banister, his regulation dress hat rests on the railing complete with plum, Jefferson Davis Pin, cord, and crossed sabers insignia.
The tin photo rests in a brass frame with patriotic motifs and gilt finish. The frame is housed in a thermoplastic union case with raised floral designs. Behind the image half, an original label reads “Littlefield, Parsons & Co., / MANUFACTURERS OF Daguerreotype Cases / L., P. & Co., are the sole Proprietors and only legal Manu-/facturers of UNION CASES, with the Embracing Riveted Hinge. / Patented October 14, 1856, / and April 21, 1857.” A burgundy velvet pad occupies the other half of the case. Hinges are complete and curved brass closure tab and hook hold the case securely closed. Slight corner cracks are noted in the upper left and low right corners of the front half of the case and the upper right exterior corner is lightly chipped. Dimensions are 3.25” x 3.75”.
A haunting view of a fresh-faced Union horse soldier. Would be a feature of any Civil War image collection. [cm][ph:L]

Material related to Civil War military Chaplains is extremely hard to find. This is a commercially produced “officer’s style” haversack with a great stencil in white on the reverse indicating its owner was the “Chaplain / 15th Regt’ / Vt.… (2025-1851). Learn More »
