Spotted Tail, born in 1823, was a prominent leader of the Brulé Sichangu Lakota Sioux tribe during a time of significant upheaval and conflict in the American West. He is often recognized as one of the most influential Native American leaders of the 19th century, playing a crucial role in the Sioux Wars and working to negotiate treaties with the United States government. Spotted Tail was known for his diplomatic skills and his dedication to modernizing the Sioux Nation, advocating for education and other key initiatives. Despite his efforts, he was tragically assassinated in 1881.
These dual printed images of Spotted Tail are mounted to a pale-yellow card. The image is in good condition with a small surface stain on the left side of the right image. The card shows minor but typical corner wear, and edges remain sharp with only mild rolling along the top. A small and inconspicuous water mark is noted at the lower left corner. There is no text on the front. The reverse is the same color and blank, save for an older penciled notation reading “Spotted Tail”/”Erma”/$350-“. The surface is mostly clean with some minor aged-related discoloration and very minor rolling at the corners. Overall measurements are 6.8” x 3.4”.
An ideal card for the collector – a scarce piece of the old American West. [CM][PH:L]
