This known photograph is overlayed in stereoscopic fashion and shows a partial boot found on the field of a Revolutionary War battle containing the severed leg of a British officer.
The images are in good condition with sharp edges and inconspicuous wear to the bottom. The mounting card is orange and unmarked across the front. Very minor corner wear is noted at the lower left and very slight edge wear is noted in localized areas. The reverse is pink and on it is written in two separate penciled hands “British Officer’s boot found on the field of battle, during the war of the Revolution. This/his leg was shot off and was in boot when found. Newburgh(?)/1754-22/$28.00”. It is clean and the edges are in largely good condition. Overall measurements are 3.4” x 7”.
A macabre, Victorian photograph of an early American artifact – a snapshot of an age, through the ages. Quite the interesting piece for the collector. [cm][ph:L]
