This dual image features a child named “War Eagle” standing in front of members of his proud Native tribe. He wears a feathered headdress and a breechcloth. It is in good condition with light surface dirt that extends to the card. The card itself is a natural color with text on the left and right reading “Sold Only by Underwood and Underwood Baltimore, MD – Adams, Kas.” A copyright date of 1889 by Underwood and Underwood and the title “LITTLE ‘WAR EAGLE,” THE PRIDE OF THE TRIBE.” are present along the bottom edge. Light corner wear is noted, as is dirt or dust along the top edge. The reverse shows surface dirt throughout and corner wear and light edge rolling. Penciled markings amount to scribbling and the number “619,” while penned numbers “76/266/276” are legible. Overall measurements are 3.5” x 7”.
A wholesome snapshot of a people and culture at the heart of the history of the old American West. [cm][ph:L]
