This dual image shows the Chief of the U-in-ta Ute tribe of the Great Basin area. He stands in a white coat and wear boots that rise to his mid-calf.
The printed photos are mounted to a larger yellow card with stylized text on either side reading “U.S. Topographical and Geological Survey of the Colorado River of the West/BY J.W. POWELL AND A.H. THOMPSON”. Edges are sharp with minor wear to the corners in the form of rolling. Miniscule outer layer loss is noted at the upper left corner. The reverse is a light blue to green color with a penciled writing reading “No. 89/Ta-vah-puts Chief of the U-in-ta Utes.” Overall measurements are 6.95” x 4.55”. Likely dates to 1874-1875.
A very rare and interesting card – a true piece of the old American West. [cm][ph:L]
