This uncommon but quintessentially Victorian dual-image features a portrait photograph of Charles Sumner, surrounded by “Skeleton Leaves” – real plants that have had their soft green tissue removed, leaving only the vein structure.

The mounting card is yellow, with credit to photographer John P. Soule of 199 Washington Street in Boston.  The copyright year is also listed as 1874, the year of Sumner’s death.  Some wear to the outer layer of the card is noted, but overall presentation and condition are nice. The reverse is blank, save for old, penciled retail listings.

Charles Sumner (January 6, 1811 – March 11, 1874) was an influential and well-known American politician, lawyer, and powerful abolitionist leader who served as a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts from 1851 until his death in 1874. As a prominent leader of the Radical Republicans, he dedicated his career to destroying the slave power, achieving full emancipation, and fighting for equal civil and voting rights for African Americans.
