This is a nice excavated example of a Federal two-piece brass button as worn on many Vermont State soldiers’ uniforms. This cuff-size button is of two-piece construction. Retains over 90% of original gold gilt on the face.  Button face has a prominent push on top half. Button exhibits the head of a stag above a shield device with ribbon below, “VERMONT” and thirteen encircling stars around the perimeter, all on a lined field.  Back is tarnished and slightly depressed with a strong, bent shank and thread. Thread and shank block much of the maker’s name, but is from Philadelphia.  Recovered from Fredericksburg, VA.   [jet]
