This is a “dug” artillery shell fired from 3” rifled cannons. This is a tall, smooth sided Read pattern shell that measures 8 ¼” long and 3” round. Topped with the typical Confederate copper fuse adaptor featuring a central fuse hole and two small spanner wrench holes. There is a half a copper sabot left.
The iron body is very clean and has only light surface pitting. Item is inert.
This item was recovered in New Hope Church, Georgia and was part of the Beverly DuBose collection that was assembled circa 1950-1980. [mk] [ph:L]
