This is an excavated specimen and this common size was for the 3” rifles. This case shot shell retains its lead sabot and most of its brass fuse adapter; the anvil and slider are gone. The lead case shot can be seen down through the open fuse. The lead band has no patina and many fine scratches suggest over cleaning. This is the type of shell without flame grooves. The iron portions of the shell are rusty with light surface pitting. Recovered near Winchester, VA. [jet] [ph:L]
