This is an excellent excavated example of the classic, solid cast Confederate Infantry-I button with a nice dusty green patina to the brass with whitish residue in recessed areas around the raised block I and the interior edge of the button. The I on this is one of the wider versions and shows some brown on the upper middle and cross bat, but there are no bends, pushes, cracks, breaks or repairs. The back is hollow and edge is likely lathe turned, as is correct, and hole is well centered although these are hand drilled.

These seem to have been produced in Georgia and introduced in mid-1863 or at least in time for the Battle of Chickamauga. Rome, Georgia, has been suggested as a point of origin, but they certainly caught on and were produced at number of localities, though those showing up in eastern contexts were likely carried there on the jackets of western troops.
