SECTIONED U.S. 3” PARROTT CASE-SHOT -- CHANCELLORSVILLE

$250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1052-55A

Offered here is a very nice half of an excavated Union artillery shell; sectioned to show the contents.  This is an iron, 3” artillery shell that was intended to be fired from a 10-pounder Parrott rifle or 3” ordnance rifle.

This shell is filled with lead case-shot balls held in place with a black tar matrix. All internal components are clearly visible: brass sabot, case-shot, matrix, zinc fuse adaptor, and powder train.

This item was excavated so the exterior iron surface is pitted. A chunk of the side wall broke out exposing canister and matrix. Sabot, fuse, and contents are in good shape.

Recovered from Chancellorsville, VA.

This shell is an excellent display piece or educational tool, as well as an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection. [jet] [ph:L]
