This is a “dug” artillery shell fired from 3” rifled cannons. This is the typical Confederate Read pattern shell. Brass fuse and lead side plug blew our when fired.
Shell has a complete brass sabot with rifling marks and attractive green patina. The typical CS lathe dimple is on the base.
The iron body shows moderate surface pitting. Uncoated. Unknown recovery location. [JET] [ph:L]
