This is an excavated State of New York belt plate. Pattern 1839 belt buckle with puppy-paw hooks. The letters “SNY” are in the center.
Brown face with traces of green and light dirt. Likely recovered in a field or pasture. Face is complete but has a few cracks and creases caused when the digger hit this with his shovel. The shovel crease is located just above the “N”. Retains 75% of the lead fill on back; all the loss is around the edge likely caused when excavated. All hooks remain.
Recovered in the Fredericksburg, Virginia area. [jet] [ph:L]
