This is either a Pattern 1839 oval US belt or cartridge box plate (impossible to tell which) that has been drastically cut down on each end. Most of the “U” is present while only a small portion of the “S.”

Back still has lead fill.

Recovered in a camp near Fredericksburg, Virginia. [jet] [ph:L]
