This is an excavated section of wood with a fired bullet embedded inside. Piece measures 4” x 4.25” x 1.5” overall. Bullet is mushroomed and has an edge cut off but it is obviously an Enfield bullet. This is an English-made Enfield bullet and the boxwood plug remains in the cavity.
The bullet was likely “found” by mistake when milling lumber, hence the cut edge. Then the block of wood later split to expose the bullet.
The wood remains solid and in good condition and bullet remains securely embedded in place. An old piece of cloth adhesive tape is attached and has “BULLET EMBEDDED IN WOOD, CIVIL WAR, VIRGINIA. FROM THE BEADLES COLLECTION.” [jet] [ph:L]
