This two-piece interlocking CS belt plate corresponds to Plate 015 in Mullinax Confederate Belt Buckles and Plates (1991.) The CS letters feature rounded serifs and on the reverse the tongue bar steps down, but continues across the disc. Also, as on that plate, the wreath employs the standard oak-leaf motif, but uses just two ribbon ties, at top and bottom, and has a solid back. Mullinax’s photo makes his look as if the upper right of the “S” is squared off, which could be just the photo: he says the letters feature rounded serifs. We note, though, that on this plate, which nicely shows the finishing file work on the faces of the letters, there is a very slight notch on that serif indicating the filer or the casting may have run into problems at this point on both plates.
This plate is in very good, excavated condition, and shows a nice light olive-green patina mixed with some thin brown gray, and has no bends or breaks. This was recovered in Orange, Virginia, and Mullinax specifically says these are a “wartime product, primarily found in the Va. theater.” [sr] [ph:L]
