For the Enfield P-1853 rifle, but also used in the .58 caliber Springfield rifle musket. Enfield bullets made in England were machine pressed. A punch that formed the cavity was often engraved and left a number, letter, or symbol in the base of the bullet. These markings in the base were probably a way to check for worn punches. English-made Enfield bullets used a boxwood plug to expand the bullet.

This specimen is a .577 caliber Enfield, machine pressed, plug cavity with a raised [6-spoke, rimless wheel]. Supplied by an unknown maker. Very nice condition.  [jet] [ph:jet]
