This is a “dug” .50 caliber Maynard cartridge. This fine specimen has the pointy-nose style bullet. Excellent green/brown patina on the brass case and tan/white patina on the bullet. The pointy bullet is much less common that the later flat-nose bullet. Disk was reattached with glue (as most have) at the bottom. A fine example of a dug Maynard cartridge.
Dr. Edward Maynard held patent #22,565 dated January 11, 1859. By this patent, cartridge cases for the Maynard carbine were made of drawn brass to form a tube with a closed end. A brass disk was soldered to the base of the tube. The large diameter of the base disk was to aid in extracting the case after firing. The cartridge was separate primed — a small hole in the base allowed the flame from a percussion cap through to ignite the powder charge.
