Recovered in central Virginia. Bayonet adapters enabled rifles such as the Model 1817 and Model 1841, as well as Southern-made military rifles, to be mounted with bayonets without weakening barrels by dovetailing in studs to engage the bayonet hilts. They could also help militarize civilian rifles, made into a military caliber. BG&M manufactured two models of adapters. The adapters, made of solid brass, have a bridge to enable them to slide over a front sight. The adapter would then be locked in place with a small set screw present in a slightly raised band on the adapter ring. The first model produced by BG&M was unmarked and had a square stud. This particular adapter is a first model; no assembly number present. Medium sized, excavated example measures 1 1/8” wide and 5/8” in height. [ad] [ph:L]
