This is one of the Sharps bullets recovered from the Congaree River which runs past the site of the State Arsenal in Columbia, SC. The condition is very good. The patina is dark gray as were all from this location since they were buried in the muck on the river bottom and were not exposed to oxygen.

A typical Sharps profile with a much larger than normal sprue left untrimmed on the bottom. The bullets found at this location usually feature a small sprue left on the base. The thought is that this was used to attach the powder charge to in the same way as the Old Model “ringtail” cartridges. [jet][ph:jet]
