This is an excavated .58 caliber Shaler patent bullet.
Ruben & Ira Shaler received patent #36,197 on August 12, 1862 for their three-piece sectional bullet. In theory, the pieces separated after exiting the barrel making “one man equal to three.” However, the separate sections were inaccurate. There are three different nose segments and three different base segments that can be found in various combinations. The middle segment is fairly uniform in all combinations.
This specimen features the short, pointy, 1-groove nose segment and a base piece with a shallow dished cavity. The three pieces are all in perfect condition with no dings or dents. Very light gray patina, possibly recovered in wet soil. The three pieces have been glued together. [jet] [ph:jet]
