This is an excavated SNY (State of New York) waist belt plate.
Pattern 1839 belt buckle with puppy-paw hooks. Brown patina on brass face with the letters “SNY” in the center. Many, many, many (did I say “many”) small “dings” on the face. There is 100% lead remaining on the back. All hooks remain.
Recovered by an old-time relic hunter who hunted Falmouth and Fredericksburg areas.
A well-worn belt plate but it is what it is; a complete and “dug” SNY plate. [jet] [ph:L]
