This is indeed a scarce Trans-Mississippi bullet. Called a “Gwyn & Campbell” carbine bullet by Mac Mason in the supplement of his ground breaking 1975 Civil War projectile reference book. However, it is not a Gwyn & Campbell/Union/Grapevine/Cosmopolitan carbine bullet. The Cosmopolitan carbine used a solid base, .52 caliber projectile.
This bullet is .58 caliber with a cone cavity; it was designed for a muzzle-loading rifle musket. Be that as it may, and whatever collector’s call it, it is still a very scarce bullet only found in the Trans-Mississippi region.
This is a short bullet with two wide, flat grooves. It has a round nose and a cone cavity. This specimen appears fired, yet remains in near perfect condition. The only evidence of being fired is a ramrod “ring” around the nose of the bullet. The only other damage is a slight squirrel chew on the skirt. The bullet retains an even light brown patina overall.
Like all Trans-Mississippi related items, this is a rare opportunity to acquire this unusual bullet. [jet] [ph:jet]
