This plate was recovered on the battlefield of Pickett’s Mill by Syd Kerksis, one of the legendary early relic hunters and collectors, author of books on military belt plates and Civil War projectiles. The plate comes with Kerksis’ original paper storage envelope bearing his ink notation that he found it in October of 1956 in a ravine located on the main line of the 5th Corps. The 5th Corps was obviously not at Pickett’s Mill as the action was part of the Atlanta Campaign. Maybe Mr. Kerksis meant to write 15th Corps?
The face of the plate has a very nice chocolate-brown patina and is free of any dings and dents. The “U.S.” stamping is very strong.
Reverse has 100% of the lead fill with both “puppy-paw” hooks and tongue. Also stamped in the lead back is “W. H. SMITH” over “BROOKLYN.”
Item comes displayed in a Riker box with the original storage envelope. [AD] [ph:L]
