Offered here is a bullet that were fired by a soldier who forgot to remove the ramrod from his musket. This speaks volumes about the stress faced in battle that could have caused a soldier to forget to take the ramrod out of his musket.
We offer a Confederate 2-groove Gardner bullet.
These lead bullets display the typical horizontal grooves of the era as well as the vertical barrel rifling. Of specific interest is the shape of the bullet nose. The lead often takes the shape of the ramrod cup and most significant is the thin line of “flashing” around the edge. This flashing was caused when the lead seeped into the windage space around the head of the ramrod due to the tremendous forces applied upon the soft lead bullet as it had to push the hard iron ramrod out of the barrel.
Truly a rarity among shot bullets! [jet] [PH:L]
